Moon - 70's and 80's filmaking returns !?

I did a post last March here about the upcoming SF Film Moon being directed in the UK by Duncan Jones, son of David Bowie. The film really looks like a return to old school filmaking in a lot of ways, Jones had already said he was influenced by the films of the 70's such as Silent Running and Alien, and from these pictures of the sets and on set graphics you can really see that, the markings below really harken back to those done by Ron Cobb for the Nostromo in Alien

Moon also is using quite extensive miniature work to create it's FX, these are being handled by Bill Pearson who way back helped create the FX for Alien and Outland and more recently the miniature work for Casino Royale and AVP: Alien vs. Predator.
Below is pictured one of the Helium 3 Harvester's which works on the moon surface collecting the rocks to extract the Helium 3 gas, a company called Think Tank Studios have created set, prop and vehicle designs in CG which have been recreated into miniatures and full size sets.

I'm really looking forward to this film, it looks like it'll be very character driven due to the nature of the story with just a core group of actors. And looking forward to seeing FX that combine old and new techniques.

If you want to see more pictures of the sets and miniatures then you can go to the Think Tank Studios site here where you can view them or dowload Zip files with higher rez pictures.

Another great post regarding this film Andrew, I hadn't heard of it till you posted about it previously and was pleased to see Sam Rockwell making a return as he's a great actor, very versatile. Say what you like about Charlies Angels, his transformation from UberGeek to UberVillain in the blink of an eye was fantastic, up there with Christopher Reeves in the Richard Donner cut of Superman 2 when Lois shoots Clark Kent with blanks.

I also can't wait to see Matt Berry playing it straight, for me he'll always be Dr Lucien Sanchez from Darkplace.

Not seen it yet, but www.play.com are selling it for £8.99 Free Delivery, I'll probably get mine through there. IMDB reviews range from superb - shit, so I guess I'll have to risk it and make my own mind up !!

This looks really nice - though I have been burned before when the set design in a film has far, far outclassed the script (see Sunshine and Event Horizon for examples). it really annoys me when shoddy scriptwriters exploit talented designers to carry a bad film.

Damn! I wish I could have worked on that.
