Ghost World (2001)

I read yesterday that Brad Renfro had died, he wasn't an actor who I particularly knew but I did remember his performance as Josh in Terry Zwigoff's 2001 film Ghost World, based on the Daniel Clowes comic book. Sad news to hear of his death at only 25 years old.
Anyway I was going to post this eventually but I thought I'd do this now. I've not read the actual comic book of Ghost World and went to see this film because I'd love Zwigoff's film Crumb about comic artist Robert Crumb.

Plot Summary:
Enid (Thora Birch) and Rebecca (Scarlett Johansson) are best friends having difficulties with the social attitudes of other people. After graduating high school, they decide to get a job and rent a house of their own. However, Enid needs to attend Arts summer school to graduate but her anti-social behavior makes her lose her job. Meanwhile, Enid and Rebecca play a prank on Seymour (Steve Buscemi), a middle-aged collector of vinyl records that also has difficulties with relationships. Seymour and Enid eventually become friends. As time goes by, Enid reaches maturity and develops a different view of life.

I really like this movie, it's a teen movie but not in the normal sense. Enid (Thora Birch) the main character really has no redeeming qualities at all, she just seems to fuck it up for everyone she knows. Steve Buscemi is great as Seymour. Also in the film is Stacey Travis who played Jill in the brit SF film Hardware. Dave Sheridan is hilarous as Doug who hangs around the convenience store. Scarlett Johansson plays Rebecca in a very unglamorous role for her.
Sadly for it's $7m budget Ghost World went on to make only $8.7m worldwide, though I'm sure it returned it's money on DVD, I would recommend this film if you haven't managed to see it yet.

Me and my girlfriend went to see this not having a clue what it was about, we both loved it. I got it on DVD when it came out. Super little film alright.

I lost a ot of respect for Scarlett Johansson when she criticised this film later in her career. Her main complaint seemed to be with the dialogue, "girls that age wouldn't say things like 'he's really giving me a boner'"... she couldn't have missed the point more if she tried.

Scarlett Johansson isn't as good as she thinks she is, still she has a nice figure.

Most actors are only as smart as their scripts, the problem starts when they try saying stuff that's not been written for them.

Liked Ghost world, still makes me laugh that 7 mill is low budget though. Try 4 grand ya hollywood bass.
