CG X-Wing - 1979

This is a CG X-Wing fighter made as a test for The Empire Strikes Back by John Whitney and Gary Demos while working at Triple-I in 1979. Pretty impressive work for 27 years ago when you look back at it ! These are the same people who went on to create the CG FX for The Last Starfighter in 1984.
At the time of this test the technology of CGI was still in it's infancy as far as movie FX, it wouldn't be until The Abyss in 1989 that people really seen their true potential.

the scene in the last starfighter where the car takes off and becomes a space ship was one of the first things i saw that got me hooked on CG animation. I couldn't get over the fact that what i was looking at wasn't real!

My first WOW moment with CG was the Genesis Wave video in Star Trek II - still has good camera work even if the graphics have dated a bit.

The only thing a lot of this early CG lacked, and is why a lot of 'Last Starfighter' looks a lot ropier now than it should, is because they didn't have any form of motion blur on the CG back then ! So when you fly past those mountains during the 'Genesis Effect' in Star Trek 2 they look weird because they don't blur.
