A while back I did a poll for favourite Pixar film, so I thought I better do one for Dreamworks Animation too. On the whole the quality of what Dreamworks have turned out in the 3D dept hasn't been a patch on Pixar over the years.
I think 2008 saw a narrowing of the gulf between PIXAR & Dreamworks. KFP is arguably way more entertaining than WALL-E and MADAGASCAR 2 kept up the pace. Next year we get MONSTERS v ALIENS in 3-D which again looks like a lot of fun but from what I'm told by those with 'inside knowledge' HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON is the one to look out for. If we have to put up with a new SHREK every 4 years to bankroll the more interesting projects then so be it. Pixar ain't slipping into 2nd place yet however-early word on 'UP' is extremely positive.
Nik I left off Traditionally-animated films like The Prince of Egypt and The Road to El Dorado and also their Stop-motion films such as Chicken Run and Wallace & Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit , this is just their CGI Stuff like Pixar
Shrek and the sequels haven't been half-bad, either; I re-watched the third one the other day, and while it isn't necessarily as great as the first one was, it's still not a bad movie overall.
Pixar, though -- their ability to be consistently good is amazing.
Kung Fu Panda was definitely Dreamworks finally hitting their stride, and creating something new and exciting. Shark Tale however continues to be one of the ugliest and most painful of their output. However Pixar really seem to be losing the plot, producing films which on the surface bring in the kiddies but then tell stories which the children I know fail to connect with. They used to be masters of creating childrens films which adults could enjoy and which released our inner child. Now they seem to be more interested in releasing the inner adult in every child.
Still, Disney are really letting themselves down with the likes of 'Meet the Robinsons' and 'Chicken Little'. 'The Wild' continues to be the most confusing mess of a film I've ever seen, considering it comes from the same stable as 101 Dalmations and The Jungle Book.
