Ridley Scott directing The Forever War !!

Oh fuck I hope this is really true, Joe Haldeman's The Forever War is one of my favourite SF books of all time. This in the hands of Ridley Scott could be a true classic of SF movie making, this from the man who brought us Alien and Bladerunner crossed with the combat of Black Hawk Down, this could be Ridley Scott's Aliens.

Click on book cover to take you to the story at Variety

Synopsis

Private William Mandella is a reluctant hero, drafted into an elite military unit to fight in a distant interstellar war against an unknowable and unconquerable alien enemy. Mandella will perform his duties and, as he survives, rise through the ranks, but his greatest test will come when he returns to Earth. Because of the effects of relativity, every time he comes home after a few months' tour of duty, centuries have gone by on Earth, making him and his fellows ever more isolated from the world for whose future they are fighting.

I've been wanting Scott to return to Sci-Fi for decades!!!

I haven't read The Forever War. Good stuff, eh? I'll have to pick it up!

It's a fantastic read.

I really hope this comes to fruition, it could be rather special indeed.

Having travelled far into the future and past, I can confidently say that this is the the best bit of news ever. In the entire history of humankind, this is as good as it gets -- and it's pretty good I must say.

Oh, and one final warning from the future -- look out for 2017. I won't give too much away, just three words: mutated panda zombie.

Jim -- you REALLY need to read the Forever War. You'll like it a lot.

Jim - Get 'Peace And War' by Joe Haldeman. It contains all three books in the series, The Forever War, Forever Free and Forever Peace.

Well worth 8 quid.

Now nothing of the book but it would be a great day to see Ridley in scream in space again, fingers crossed cuase theres been a few rumours over the last 20 years with nothing really surfacing, still would have liked to see what he'd have done with the Giger colaberation that fell of the edge of the universe..think it was called The Tourist

Ridley Scott on the Simon Mayo show on 5Live this afternoon. He's just got the team of writers that he wants together and they are starting work on the screenplay soon. His time-scale seems to be 18-24 months but he wasn't clear whether this was before starting shooting of getting the finished film out there. He didn't go into too much detail about what he has planned, but he did say that one of the hardest things is making sure that the near future doesn't end up looking like the far future as a sort of CGI wet dream.

Should be good.

Nice one -- thanks for the update, Inchy.

Just gave my last copy away to another convert -- have to order some more of Amazon!

That's good news Inchy, CGI wet dreams often make shit movies, Star Wars Prequels anyone !? :) I hope Ridley gets the likes of Ron Cobb in on this film and some shit hot set builders !
I've got 3 copies of Forever War and 5 of Starship Troopers !! :) All got different covers of course !!

Simon Mayo said that the show had had "loads" of calls regarding The Forever War so it looks like we're not the only ones getting excited.
Sir Rid was his usual sombre, serious self, but I'm glad he didn't say "we're gonna make an action movie" because that's not really what it's about. I think he'll do the book justice.
