I understand what culbard is saying (it's the main reason I don't like Frank Miller). But I found that Batman Begins, tho filled with a pervasive darkness, had a 'light at the end of the tunnel' feel to the story. There was hope and a strong sense of 'yay for the good guys' at the end of the movie. My ridiculous, mind numbing fear of sharks made the "shark-attacking-Batman-on-the-helicopter" scene difficult to watch.
I'm going for Begins. Really enjoyed it and thought it had the best action sequence of any of the films, the batmobile chase. I know not many people agree but I thought the new one was a bit rubbish.
As well as the PG-13 rating (like what the hell is going on with that??? So what, would Robocop be a U nowadays? Did the BBFC actually watch this movie?) there's also the issue concerning how the Bat looks in live action and how it borders on the ridiculous as opposed to the terrifying.
Never mind Mark Millar's fake Orson Welles production, I'd have liked to have seen a Val Lewton / Jacques Tourneur Batman movie, where you basically never see the bat (ala Cat People).
How about they make it as real as heck, but set it in the period it was created - the thirties? And have the Bat quite literally confined to the shadows casting bat silhouettes? Remember the scene on the bridge in "The Shadow"? Or how we never see the Mothman in the 'Mothman Prophecies' and yet we walk away with a pretty substantial impression?

I went with the 1966 movie (which I watched recently as I bought it for my son).
And here's why.
Shark Repellent Bat Spray.
The world's a grim and dark enough place as it is. I'd rather my escapism went to places less dark than they already are.
I always wanted to see a hero called Sharkman have some 'Bat Repellent Shark Spray' :)

I voted Batman Begins, Dark Knight was great but a little to serious for me.
