Although it was followed by lots of sub standard and downright shit sequels and TV series Spin-off's (Freddy's Nightmares) the first A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984) is still a real gem of a movie. I always thought the humour was darker in this film and it had some genuine scares. Freddy's make-up by David Miller had a lot more depth to it, the later sequel make-up's developed by Kevin Yagher had more of a stylized look, the way Freddy was seen in the film was darker, by the 2nd film he was just running around in daylight.
A Nightmare on Elm Street is also Johnny Depp's first film, he's come a long way in 24 years. Lead actress Heather Langenkamp is down as a production crew member on the 2004 remake of Dawn of the Dead, not sure what she did but she's also still acting.
Anyway news has hit the net that a sequel/ re-imagining is on the cards. After remakes of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Halloween,The Hills have Eyes, The Fog etc... all complete duds compared to their counterparts the question is again why bother ? Reports suggest that we'll see more of Freddy Kruger's back story, now all we need to know is what the first film tells us, that he was a child killer, why do we need to go into the why's and how's ? This just over complicates things, he's the bad guy we don't need to know much more than that. Who else could play Freddy besides Robert Englund anyway ?
Read the report about the remake
On a side note I was married in a registry office on an Elm Street, now that was a nightmare ! :) Don't tell the wife I said that though... oh shit too late, she's got the rolling pin again, I won't mention what she does with it though... ouch !!!!

Oh boy, remakes ! Why bother with something like this that's had umpteen sequels already,it's not like it was a one off film that nobody's really heard of,didn't they only make Freddy vs Jason a few years ago ? I wonder what Robert Englund thinks of this ?
I think as soon as last year they were still doing a TV spin off thing with Robert Englund playing Freddy, another show like 'Freddy's Nightmares' were he presents a story !
I've just checked and it was done in 2005 called "A Nightmare on Elm Street: Real Nightmares"
Hollywood keeps ruining it's bad guys by wanting us to feel sorry for them with a cute "I'm just a messed up little boy who just wanted to be loved" story lines...
Vader, Hannibal, Mike Miers...and now Freddy? What next, the shark from JAWS was abandoned by his mother when he was but a little tike?
I actually saw the third movie first so, in a way, "Dream Warriors" is my favourite but it's the original I still have on an old Beta tape somewhere!
Depp's first movie? Wow. After Pirates Of The Caribbean 3 it's a shame it wasn't his last!
Ah Elm Street right next to the old Odeon Cinema!!
Not that I ever thought Robert Englund was a great actor but it would be hard to see another actor carry Freddy off
