Doctor Who criticism !

It does make you wonder how these Christian groups managed to get an advanced screening of the new show ?! Stuff like the two articles below prove that some people have nothing better to moan about in my opinion ! In the pic above the Doctor is saying 'What the f**k !?!'

Doctor Who' slammed by Christian groups

Doctor Who has been criticised by Christian groups for insinuating that the Time Lord is a second Messiah.

The special Christmas Day episode of the show, which features Kylie Minogue, was accused of subverting religious iconography.

In 'Voyage of the Damned' The Doctor, played by David Tennant, saves a ship from a meteorite storm and persuades the passengers of his magical powers.

Writer Russell T Davies defended the use of the imagery in the episode, saying: "The series lends itself to religious iconography because the Doctor is a proper saviour. He saves the world through the power of his mind and passion."

But group Christian Voice insisted that the Doctor is nothing like a Messiah. Director of the organisation, Stephen Green, said: "The Doctor would have to do a lot more than the usual prancing around to be a messiah. He has to save people from their sins."

'Doctor Who' criticised by Titanic survivor

Doctor Who's forthcoming Christmas special has been criticised by the last remaining Titanic survivor.

Millvina Dean, 95, has claimed that the show's producers have displayed insensitivity by featuring the Titanic in the festive episode.

Voyage Of The Damned, which airs on Christmas Day, sees The Doctor battling a new enemy on board a luxury space cruiser called the Titanic. The space ship later ends up in flames when disaster strikes.

"The Titanic was a tragedy which tore so many families apart," Millvina is quoted by the Daily Record as saying. "I lost my father and he lies on that wreck. I think it is disrespectful to make entertainment of such a tragedy."

However, a spokeswoman for the show insisted: "No offence was intended. Voyage Of The Damned is set on a space ship called The Titanic and not a boat."

We've turned into a society of moaners and whingers.

Hmmm. I think the press like to make more of this than their actually is. Well, actually, we know the press likes to make more of stories concerning religion than there actually are (I refer you to the ordance survey maps, Winterval and hot cross buns nonsense that the press latched on to in recent years).

Must have been a slow news day.

Okay...as a Christian and a HUGE Dr. WHO fan (and a huge Dune fan...yes, there is a MESSIAH there two...ooh, we must ban that now!) let me just say to the other 'Christians' who are complaining..."LIGHTEN UP you uneducated freaks! Stop being so ignorant!" If the Doctor comes across as a 'savior', well what's wrong with that?!?! Dr. Who isn't saying "Hey, I'm the new and improved Jesus - drink some wine dudes." As I understand it, MESSIAH translates to 'savior', not GOD. SHEESH!

I'd quite happily watch Tennant's Doctor being nailed up on a cross. 5 seconds with his sonic screwdriver and he'd be back down again criticizing the Romans for their dodgy carpentry skills... sounds like a class episode to me.

It's difficult to comment til I've seen this episode Andrew, but as an avid Dr Who fan, I can't wait to see it! I'm also a Christian.
Some Christian groups can depict us as a load of fanatic miseries! Hey, true Christians are just ordinary people who happen to believe in a creator and a saviour, it's a simple as that!
If I'd taken note of these critics, I'd never have seen Monty Python's Life of Brian which is a hoot! Let's discuss this episode after we've seen it eh?

From a person who has friends from a few different religions, and myself being a person without any real beliefs, although I do follow the Bill & Ted teaching of "Be excellent to each other." I realize that quite often religious group or not, there are people out there that put the average member in a bad light because of extreme views.
I seen this article more as a bit of fun, and as I said how did they get to see Doctor Who before anyone else ? :) As Ian says, the press love making mountains out of mole hills !!

I'm getting a bit worried by how much magic is creeping into who, I'll reserve judgement until I see the show though. And stop dribbling over kylie.

I do however think the Titanic survivor comment is valid. It's one thing to make a movie dramatising actual events, where hundreds of people died, but another to use a similar named thing for entertainment. Is there a statute of limitations on how traumatic a thing was?

Will the doc save people from a futuristic holiday camp called Auschwitz next year?

It is rather telling that their supposedly omnipotent god is threatened by Dr Who of all things. Seems to me that they don't believe either.

As a proud and committed atheist, I was kind of hoping that this imaginary friend business would have been solved after 65,000 years of human societies.

I'd rather see somebody criticising the fact that the Russell Davies written episodes are always a bit rubbish really, compared to the other writers who work on the show. But I guess as boss, he can be as rubbish as he likes and there's no-one to stop him.

Have to say, having seen the Christmas special now, I preferred Futurama's "A Flight to Remember", which was basically the same concept. A space cruiser suped up to look like the Titanic etc.

Not really seen much of Futurama but I'll try and keep a look out for that one !!

Religious people especially fanatics project the human into their religion, so everything holy and sacred is linked to a human image, like the messiah, the angels or maybe even god. They need to do this to explain themselves and give answers to the secrets of existence. Criticism or sacrilegious acts (such as presenting another saviour)therefore atacks their existence. Atheists don´t project, they take the cosmic secrets as they are.
