£1.2bn' wasted on unwanted gifts

One of the reasons the wife and I only buy each other a handful of presents, and try to get the kids stuff they genuinely want as opposed just buying them stuff for the sake of it. I know people who have toys and games, things that the kids didn't even open still wrapped in cellophane the following Christmas.

Thank goodness for sensible people on this planet like your good self, Andrew!

Now I don't feel guilty for being VERY specific about what I wanted. Aw hell, I didn't feel guilty at all. Now I just feel justified.

I'm lucky that Karen and I are very canny about sussing out what the other would like - having similar tastes helps. Not a single gift amiss this year... but all the packaging and cardboard has driven me mad yet again.

It's nice to give a few surprises though, don't you think?

I'm quite happy knowing what presents I'm going to get. But then again I'm not a huge fan of Christmas ! Ba Humbug I say :)

I referred people to an online wish list (Amazon) this year and came up top trumps.

It's a pretty nifty idea (an online wish list is) because if you make the wish list long enough, Christmas and birthdays can still be full of pleasant surprises and you get exactly what you wanted.

Just like writing a letter to Father Christmas again.

This year I got EVERYTHING (lots of DVDs and books) I had hoped for...well, except for world peace and the chance to re-edit the Star Wars prequel trilogy.

Merry Christmas (late) and (early) Happy New Year, Andrew!

This year I got.

A dalek cookie maker
A dalek bubble bath
A dalek & tardis shaker maker
A dalek sec
And - a dalek

The shaker maker tardis is pretty smart, unless you don't read instructions and get the mix wrong. My first attempt was a tardis shaped rubble thing.

My sisters kids had half of Toys 'r' Us in their living room on Christmas Day, and that was before presents of the grandparents etc...
