Dr. Otto and the Riddle of the Gloom Beam (1986)

Dr. Otto and the Riddle of the Gloom Beam directed by John Cherry and starring Jim Varney (Ernest Goes to Camp, Toy Story and Toy Story 2,) is one of those films that I occasionally mention to people and all I get in return is a blank stare, but a select few of my friends over the years have had the pleasure of this low budget classic, so much so we even quote lines on a regular basis. Now when I write about specific films on this blog I tend to save time writing a synopsis of the plot for those who maybe haven't seen it by posting one from the IMDB, so here's all that the IMDB had to say about Dr. Otto and the Riddle of the Gloom Beam's plot

Story Synopsis
Ernest P. Worrell grows a hand out of the top of his head and tries to destroy the world.

Now I suppose that's all you really need to know, it really is a movie that has to be seen with a bunch of mates who like trashy films. Jim Varney plays a selection of characters in this film and is quite simply brilliant. This film has naff FX, corny jokes, one of the best robots ever and is dirt cheap on DVD at around £5.99 or cheaper. And as Dr Otto says "It's my lowest moment !"

Love it! Hard to believe, but Jim V. R.I.P. was trained in Shakespearean theater...he was also an accomplished Dulcimer player. I often do the hand on the head routine with my boys while laughing maniacally with my jaw moving mechanically...they don't get it yet...but they will one day.

Blank stare!

I'll have to look up this classic of science fiction.
